Vibes
James Horner
" Vibes gives you a strange Horner feeling "Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the limited release
A reissue of the 1990 club release, Varèse re releases a lost James Horner score yet again. Already out of print since the 90's, this release confirms the occasional (and rare) original James Horner style. From time to time, this man delivered a unique pallette of sounds and ideas. He did it once in 1986 with Where the River Runs Black and Vibes is anything less original. In fact, somehow Vibes is even more interesting. The occasional dancing playfulness ("Andes Arrival" and "The Journey Begins"), the moments of wonder and awe ("The Lost City"), Vibes can not easily be compared with something else. Yes The 33 due to the ethnic music or the original mysterious music that made Where the River Runs Black so abstract. There's even some synthesized danger on board here ("Sylvia's Vision"), and while the synths work in context here, it also sounds incredibly cheap. No Vibes is strange, and yet somehow quite compelling to listen to as well. I suppose back in the day people would have listened to it differently than today, considering the lack of color in today's music, the originality of Horner's music and for James Horner being anything but ... James Horner.
Again, for people attacking Horner for being unoriginal. Give Vibes a whirl.
33 playfulness is lovely and the highlight of the original score.
Naturally this is not the grand sweeping James Horner here, and people will be dissapointed by it.
I hadn't the faintest clue what this movie was about, and judging by the score I still don't know.
