Un Monde Violent

Whereas contemporary French crime thrillers usually never strike a special chord, a clear exception are several stellar films by Jacques Audiard, with equally eminent scores by Alexandre Desplat (Mon Coeur S'est Arrêté, Un Prophète, and Sur Mes Lèvres). Other notable music examples include certain works by Bruno Coulais (MR 73, Truands, Le Deuxième Souffle - the outstanding cue Le Fourgon Rouge), and just recently, Guillaume Ferran - Brûle le Sang, among others. What all these scores share is a strong focus on a classic/baroque/string approach, but not devoid of any modern elements. Gaspar Claus' music to Un Monde Violent is yet another perfect example of this.

The film tells the story of two brothers spiraling deeper into the world of crime, facing a variety of themes, emotions, and moral conflicts . To reflect and counterbalance all feasible emotions, using a degree of modern technology, it is driven by a strong cello ostinato and techniques applied to all the strings featured in the score, from pizzicato , glissando, arpeggio, and tremolo, creating an intense, reflective, redemptive, unsettling, haunting, and softly emotional experience altogether . Throughout its dramatic progression, the composer's deeply felt music adeptly shifts and changes between all necessary emotions.

However, there are clear references to other composers, film and classical music, even directly quoting works such as Clint Mansell 's Requiem for a Dream, which is the largest influence of all. Additionally, there is a semi-song staying remarkably close to all other music, including an interesting dissonant military march, while portions of the song's structure and vocals are further removed from the overall score. To some degree, all this does detract from the quality of Gaspar Claus' strong music for Un Monde Violent.
