The Homecoming / Rascals and Robbers

Jerry Goldsmith and James Horner

" 2 Family lights for the price of one "

Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the regular release

Film Score Monthly combined two masters together, for 2 rather unusual scores. Jerry Goldsmith of course did a lot of TV work back in the days, so The Waltons (for which he did the series as well) isn't that uncommon. For James Horner it was slightly different, since he roled in the movie business faster than expected. Still he did Rascals and Robbers in 1982, 11 years later than The Homecoming: A Christmas Story, the score that opens this album rather soothingly. Because this 20 minute score is rather easy to appreciate. Playful, light and occasionally softly dramatic. It's the perfect easy to listen to score whilst doing something else. The theme is nice and light, the occasional drama never hard or heavy and the score in general light and easy. Hardly any highlights, just easy stuff. Then Horner's Rascals and Robbers is a bit more on the action / light suspense side. Considering the boys are always in danger or checking things out, Horner's music is a bit more rhythmic as well. Of course the light version but still, you hear Star Trek II (same year) in it, all the while there's a bit of exotic color to be found amongst the Carnival music. In truth, Rascals and Robbers is a bit more entertaining because of the color, the pace, the adventure. The Homecoming is light loveliness and a bit easier to forget. Still, a small and gentle surprise for the fans of the composer.

Though 11 years apart, both scores complement each other well.
Horner's rhythmic music is quite fun, and an early Star Trek II pleasure ("Reba's Ride").
Rascals and Robbers truly gives the earliest Horner trademarks away.
