The Haunting
Jerry Goldsmith
" The Haunting is decent, effective and at one moment incredibly powerful "Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the regular release
The Haunting wasn't a particularly good film from Jan De Bont, but it was an entertaining ride nonetheless. One that held its foundations in the capable hands of architect Jerry Goldsmith. Because as ever, Goldsmith was capable of setting down the tone of the film, without forgetting to tie it together with themes and motives, and specific sounds for the terrors and dangers of Hill House. And yet, it should have opened after a minute, with the menacing tones for the haunted Hill House. Not the carousel theme it opens with now ("The Carousel"). Alas, if we forget this obstacle you'll soon discover the virtues of Goldsmith's music. Because he can create the terror when Hill House demands it ("Terror in Bed", "Return to the Carousel" and "Finally Home"), whilst unleashing the mystery in equally thematic ways. Because Hill House has both a wonderful mysterious theme as an evil dark motif for the resident of the house. It's in the themes and structure that Goldsmith remains Goldsmith, and his touch of class did elevate so many films he worked on. The Haunting would of course be something lesser if it wasn't for "Finally Home", the kick-ass moment of the score. But still, in terms of themes and undeniable effectiveness, The Haunting remains damn decent and a short but effective little score.
Goldsmith's incredible talent, forming themes that structure the entire soundtrack.
"Finally Home", a track of potency and utter power in the film and on disc.
It is wrong to open with the carousel tune, it sets the tone completely wrong from the get go.
Not everything is equally interesting, despite its effectiveness.
