Six Degrees of Separation

Jerry Goldsmith

" Six reasons for you to ignore "

Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the regular release

Six Degrees of Separation is somewhat considered the official introduction of Will Smith in Hollywood. And the film is still positively regarded, no matter if it wasn't a success at the box office. The score itself is nothing amazing. Solid Goldsmith with a catchy opening (used in the trailer of The Ladykillers), a couple of classical sounding pieces, some soft underscore and a finale of 5 minutes that captures basically everything you need to remember of this score. What makes matters worse is that some tracks are 30 seconds long, and completely and always surrounded by dialogue tracks which may be interesting but have literally no business here. Thankfully they are not linked to the musical tracks, or heard behind the music of Goldsmith. So you can easily program them out. But sometimes you even hear a complete scene in the dialogue, when for instance Will Smith's character is on the phone with Stockard Channing (which you would easily mistake for Meryl Streep, ironically the person who was actually interested in playing the lead), hearing the noises over the recording.

Basically this is ridiculous, just like the ridiculous nature of omitting a track on the back cover of the album. So, now we have to mention it as an unknown track in every track listing because someone forgot there was actually a 26th track. Amateurism which proves these people didn't even want to check their album before printing it. A score which is in itself summarized by one lovely track ("No Heart"), featured on an album which is painstakingly one of the worst produced albums ever. Dismiss it and buy the sole cue digitally instead.

One good cue ("No Heart"), it summarizes everything you need to know about the score.
Dialogue, never does it has business on a soundtrack.
Almost as much dialogue as there is score.
Who wants a 26th track? Apparently not the producers considering they didn't label it on the back cover of the CD.
