Sawano Suites is a release comprising five lively performed suites based on original Hiroyuki Sawano scores - the TV series Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan), Guilty Crown, Nanatsu no taizai (The Seven Deadly Sins), Kidô Senshi Gandamu Yunikôn (Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn) and the film Puromea (Promare) – all released on streaming platforms in 2025.
In all suites, Sawano chose the content for these suites, as he does in his worldwide tour in 2025, plays the piano, and musicians return, having previously performed on each respective original recording.The suite from Shingeki no Kyojin is representative of most of them, featuring one horn musician (originally 13 musicians), a quite dominant focus on original vocalists and a rock opera, dominated by the combination of infinite string sections, drum kit, and other instruments.
In regard to personal beliefs on what a concert 'should' do, is complicated; it is about having original musicians and the composer return, capturing the essence of every body of work and being as faithful as possible to the original recording, even a grosso modo approach, providing new enlightening views on a score. Sawano accomplishes this to a degree, but due to the rock opera approach, underusing the subtleties, and making decisions devoid of fundamental ingredients of each score, it is a just above average representation of each work, well-performed, but far from truly engaging.
