" Red Horner Heat "

Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the regular release

Red Heat follows Arnold Schwarzenegger to Chicago, with on his side James Belushi and James Horner. For Horner, a return after Commando with the same lead. So it's not a strange coincidence it sounds from time to time like Commando. The ethnic flutes creating the violence in "Victor Escapes" or the pace and rhythm of "Russian Streets" and "Tailing Kat / The Set Up" (though the second part is moody as hell). But Red Heat has its originality too, and "Main Title" is quite damn it catchy as hell. A Russian choral song with Horner's typical loud percussion in between, it's a damn fine intriguing entry in the Horner "original" list.

Original in some ways yes, but moody as hell too. Most of the cues have long lingering eeriness, nothingness and sound design, the stuff that creates the environment perfectly but also forgets to make it gripping once you start realizing it's beginning to sound repetitive. Again, in the action the score is quite potent, as it usually was when he started creating pace fueled by suspense, but Red Heat also has its portions of moody sound design that is again effective but overtly long as well. Red Heat might work to some advantage, I also consider it more a background score than a satisfying listen.

Opening and closing cue is great, a Russian choral hymn and Horner's sound attached to it.
In the action / suspense the score is quite potent and loud.
There's a hefty dosage of mood to be found, sound design that doesn't always sell.
