Mom and Dad Save the World
Jerry Goldsmith
" Composer didn't save the movie "Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the regular release
Mom and Dad Save the World isn't exactly the proudest moment of Jerry Goldsmith's career. But then again, I'm sure he had fun composing it. It shows, it's diverse and energetic. And a lot more lively than the film probably deserved. So let's not dwell too long on the poor film, but on the score. So, it sounds fun and it's incredibly playful. Full of loud marching themes, playfulness and even love themes. So why then isn't it that much talked about? Well perhaps it's because it links itself to a lot of great scores, but struggles to find its own identity? Well, at least I had fun hearing several cues. Like the opening march in "Meet Spengo", or the totally zany action piece "Misunderstood" (throwing ideas and styles of Gremlins 2 in the mix for old times sakes), or the love themes performances in "The Flight Home" and "On the Roof". I admit that the middle drags a bit more than I wanted. The creativity is still on board, but something's not there. But begin and end are fun enough, and way too powerful enough for this kind of picture. It's weird. At one end it's Goldsmith doing what he does best (being fun and wild). At another end it lacks the very thing that made most of his scores memorable. Meaning a defining edge. It's fun, it's wild and yet it's forgettable too. A fine line which some will appreciate more than others.
Fun, over the top. Goldsmith could do this well, even if it ain't a classic.
Mimicking the styles of Gremlins 2 the most, especially in its zany sound.
The themes are the star of the score. A nice love theme, an over the top march.
While it's all fun and zany, it's also forgettable (especially in the middle).
Electronics sound silly from time to time.
