Medicine Man

Jerry Goldsmith

" Goldsmith inspired Sean Connery's hairstyle, Connery inspired Goldsmith to write this beauty. A win win situation! "

Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the regular release

Medicine Man might not have been a good film for many, but for me it was a good film with a very strong message. And Jerry Goldsmith's memorable score aided in that message tremendously. At times heartbreakingly beautiful, at times harmlessly playful, at times menacingly on edge. Goldsmith once again delivered the music as the film showed it. This is thematic mode, this is beautiful and meaningful mode, this is memorable mode. Perhaps also in impossible mode, considering it seems to be rather difficult this day and age to deliver something equally meaningful. Anyway, the charm of this score is the combination of the delightful playful material ("Rae's Arrival / Opening Titles", "The Harvest") and the wonderful dramatic beauty theme ("The Trees", a track which solely deserves an Oscar). In between we have the time theme (track 1 and also "The Fire"), a track that stands for the persons running out of time. And Goldsmith isn't afraid to deliver this alongside a dark and urgent sound (track 6). In general, Medicine Man happily hops from one style to another, never forgetting to keep it interesting and satisfying. In Goldsmith's usual style (strong melodic orchestral sound with assistance of his electronics). In general, another worthy Goldsmith release of the 90's.

Multiple themes keep this score fresh and interesting.
The playful theme is so delightful, the hope theme an Oscar contender on its own.
Even the 'Time' theme is darn interesting, in Goldsmith's own style ("The Fire").
Score is just about the right length.
