In Harm's Way is one of Jerry Goldsmith's earliest scores, and yet Intrada presents an expanded release of it in quite spectacular sound quality. It has seen various releases throughout these years, and this one has various minutes of additional material. It will probably be the sound quality that will lure people over the line if you consider it has been around for quite some time. That said, In Harm's Way is not particulary a score I'll listen to frequently. As ever it has enough panache and intellect to win you over, but for me it's quite a sedated effort. Perhaps this different album presentation makes it sound that way (opening with the jazz pieces and later on the soft (even Hawaiian cues), it leaves the more powerful stuff at the end for a small bombastic explosion. Okay, explosion might be exaggerating things a bit, but it still ends with the more war like material. For the majority it's quite lovely but sedated material. The "Intermission" cue is perhaps one of the strongest, delivering a rather potent theme reprisal. In general it's not that it lacks quality, because it would beat today's material without a fight. It just lacks something special, and can't seem to grab my attention. For the fans and those who want a truly wonderful audio experience.
Decent war drama with enough variation.
Sound quality is truly superb considering the time it was composed in.
Personally it doesn't grab me. It misses a spark.
