The animated Indonesian film Garuda di Dadaku (Garuda: Dare to Dream, 2026) is a retelling of two previous live-action films. There is a boy who is given a second chance to develop his football skills through a mystical bird named Garuda and everyone can fill in all the blanks.
For the original score, Ricky Lionardi is credited as composer and musical director, which explains the inclusion of a series of additional composers – Abel Huray, Samuel Armando Gunawan, Kingly Jonathan Liow, Shandy Eka Permadi, Ruth Felicia Christina and Samuel Armando Gunawan – with whom he has worked on other scores as well.
There is reason why the monotonous quality of animated templates targeted at children aligns with most of their original scores. They can be semi- or fully orchestral, often technically and contextually satisfying all needs, but as a genre, especially given the whimsical comedy ingredient and predictabilities, it rarely fulfills needs beyond a superficial level. Basically, a hundred composers could compose the score, using all the similar techniques and other 'nodes of impact', but would probably not come up with something different, despite detailed richness in technicalities.
The score features all these traits technically quite well through the performance of an Eastern European orchestra and a series of popular, sometimes cheap, additional forms of percussion and synthesized sounds, as well as influences from other musical genres. However, there is some value within this score through some abominable electronics and slightly less streamlined orchestral writing, often in a hybrid.
Since 2018, the composer has written a consistently high average of scores each year, perhaps breaking a record with already having completed nine scores in 2026. Garuda di Dadaku is a score of no appeal, while there are some memorable ones, including excellent music for Esok Tanpa Ibu (Mothernet, 2025).
