Forrest Gump
Alan Silvestri
" Short track album full of wondrous moments for the blockbuster film of '94 "Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the regular release
Let’s talk about one of the movies that really matter. Forrest Gump had it all! Emotional classy acting, dramatic script development and movie magic combining visual excellence with amazing sound. That sound was enhanced by Alan Silvestri’s musical score. Having received a nomination for its wonderful music, Alan Silvestri finally received the recognition he deserved. Of course, Forrest Gump was considered Oscar friendly and so it was easy and understandable to nominate its charming score.
It is an emotionally laden effort where the piano sets down the dramatic effect while strings and brass depict the action and excitement. In a way this effort doesn't differ much from Contact (another winning combination of Zemeckis and Silvestri magic). But here the themes and meaning are just a little stronger.
Of course many people will easily recollect many classic scenes. And by that comes the wonderful music of Alan Silvestri. Take for instance "I'm Forrest ... Forrest Gump". With its feather light camera movement comes a charming musical moment of the main theme. There are 2 other themes, more dramatic in tone holding emotional weight in "You Can't Sit Here" and the other in "They're Sending me to Vietnam". And their best versions are heard during "Suite from Forrest Gump".
And then there’s the powerful march, exploding on the screen every time Forrest does something bold or right. "Run Forrest Run", "The Crimson Gump", "The Crusade" and "Suite from Forrest Gump" are examples of this exploding nature. There’s variation between the various performances. For instance it is more powerful during "The Crimson Gump".
And besides all these marches and dramatic weights lies difference, namely "Jesus on the Main Line". Being arranged by Silvestri, it holds a wonderful addictive choral moment that really worked during the scene in the movie.
In the end we discover that Forrest Gump has 2 different moods. One is the dramatic element and the other has the more rambunctious adventure music. And both make for a wonderful score in the movie as on CD. This is an easy to like score, because it holds such great value in one of the movies of the century. It is still typical Silvestri music that we hear but everything works and clicks like it supposed to do. And if there are people that don’t know what to receive, then just follow the advice of Tom Hanks. Take a chocolate.
