Balcanica is a 2026 Italian-Serbian-Croatian co-production. The film is a archetypal road movie, showing two exiled Afghani musicians travelling across the Balcan towards Italy. On route, convivial ingredients such as the emotional transition are interlinked with the essence and importance of music.
Initially, director Nicola Sorcinelli and composer Michel Braga agreed on having music only at the end of the film. But they saw potential in using the theme of the integral importance of music to the fleeing refugees, linked emotionally, spiritually, culturally and geographically.
The composer's score is sparse, utilising a horn, tuba, metaphysical electronics, piano, strings, and acoustic guitar. Much of the original score is solemn, hesitant, and atmospheric in the tradition of a deeper ethereal melancholy. At times, cues are given central stage, allowing them to breathe, with the intent of some issues mentioned before. However, as Balcanica is a rather uncomplicated road movie with immediate emotions, there is a lot of value in the music attempting to address the things as intended by the filmmaker, which are not that well developed. Ultimately, the music in and out of context levels in between interesting and generic ideas but it also is a metaphysical, sparse congenial work.
