Hirokazu Kore-eda (Koreeda Hirokazu) is a Japanese director of a variety of splendid social, autonomous films with a very specific, dilatory contemplative style. In recent years, he has even begun directing three television series. Ashura no Gotoku (Asura) is his second outing exclusively for Netflix. While authors of cinema generally do not succeed upon making a series, Kore-eda does.
The series focuses on the relationship between four sisters and includes many subtleties and the idiosyncratic voice of Kore-eda. There are a variety of exemplary moments, including a memorable ceremonial scene and a 'truthful' portrayal of family matters.
Fox Capture Plan wrote an original score for the series. The self-made composers of this jazz rock band - Tsukasa Inoue, Hidehiro Kawai and Ryô Kishimoto - slowly expanded on how to create scores, but in all aspects, still remain rather rudiment. It is a formation including them performing the piano, bass, and drums, while guitar, percussion, tambourine, accordion, trumpet, saxophone, and clarinet are delegated to other musicians. Given this musical palette and the still rather inexperienced, self-made quality of the composers, there is a minimal degree of music that exceeds basic compositional value.
However, in utilising the precious assets of Koichiro Muroya Strings, as on numerous other occasions, as have many other Japanese composers, the score does have a deeper and more mature component. In fact, in every cue, they transcend the basic level of writing to greater heights, as a standalone, but especially in context; the most important, pivotal sequences are underscored using these strings.
Practically all creations by Kore-eda require no music and yet they do. The influence of the strings section changes this rather drastically.
