NP: The Secret Life Of Bees - Mark Isham

First listen. So far it sounds like a very pleasant and easy listen, a score with lovely yet simple writing for piano, guitar and strings with occasional wordless vocals. Nothing groundbreaking but it is undoubtedly very pleasant.

I am surprised the 007 theme wasn't used more often given the early talk about the score. I can't say I mind, as it's a theme I've heard so often that it wearies me a little.

I think the Bond theme is used enough in this score, but I'm still dying to hear the twangy guitar playing it in an action cue. sad

I think Bond theme is enought too. In fact there are cues , Bond in tahti , wich i could prefer arnold's or the new bond song instead monty norman's theme.

Im listening again this score, it's cool very cool.

NP: Quantum Of Solace - David Arnold

I'm with Demetris. I'm also underwhelmed especially coming off Casino Royale which was one of the best scores composed in 2006. This is pretty standard fair for Arnold. It's exciting for sure but the action material doesn't really do much different than what we have already hear from the pen of Arnold. After my first listen I can't really pin point the new themes which is worrisome. I think the weakness in thematic clarity comes from the fact that Arnold didn't write the film's title song. What made Casino Royale such a treat... as well as Tomorrow Never Dies... was that he would incorporate the song's melody into the score. Unfortunately, Arnold gets the shaft and Jack White / Alicia Keys tune is rather dull and uninspired. Nothing much to really work with.

So, I will have to give this score another spin but I can't say it's up there with Casino Royale where after my first listen I couldn't wait to give it another spin... and another and another and another...

OK. You know..The mission is one of the best tracks from Goldsmith ever. Realy beautiful and touching.

the CIA fanfarre is fabolous, I want a Deluxe edition of this score! I remember much more action music in the film!

A very interesting, and sometimes sublime, thriller score from the Maestro.

    NP:Quantum of Solace (Arnold)

There not any "City of Lovers" theres not any "blunt Instrument" and sure theres not any "miami International"....but there are a lot of more interesting orchestrations here!

I even can say is one of the most changelling scores from Arnold, he goes a little bit out of his confort place. (one of my complaintment about Arnold is he scored some minor action sequences in Casino Royale like if New York was being destroyed )

Yes Anthony ..."target terminated" punk punk punk

But I can die for this 3 action minutes of "pursuit at pour Prince", I'm weak for electric guitars (and sometimes it's very close to the acclamaited music of Casino Royale trailer )

I never could expect a track like a "Night at the opera" from Arnold. more subtle and less fireworks here. Even a sensual touch.

We agree sir. The Mission is a truly amazing track. The chours is wonderful. And what a closing.
And I share your thoughts on the Bond score too.

Wow, GOD. This is SERIOUSLY bad. The pan (whatever) flutes and pipes turned me off but i thought i'd proceed, "Pursuit At Port Au Prince" made me run around excited thinking that THIS IS PROPER USE OF ELECTRIC GUITARS IN FILM MUSIC up until the next piece started and was asleep for the next 35 minutes up until the horrendous americana guitars on distortion on "The Dead Don't Care About Vengeance" which woke me up only to be drowned in the truly horrendous SONG! My God, except the truly awful sound, listen to the vocals, they're WAY OFF, most of the time! And the sound is like the recorded it in a garage with a cheap 10 year old pc or something.

Seriously, this is very underwhelming. Unoriginal and a very loose score with a couple of GREAT parts only, Santaolallisms from Arnold for God's sake and a truly horrible song that should have never seen the light of day, it's very amateurish. Oh and i forgot the 40 minutes of snoozing underscore.

Now someone please explain to me WHY this is a great score as you've been talking all weekend about it 'cause i am pissed. Switched it off, back to CASINO ROYALE- ages better!

Seriously, there's 3 or 4 cues which are good action but nothing new, still very enjoyable. You can buy these off iTunes or something, individual tracks. I am now on my 3rd listen, the rest is disposable.

    BASIL POLEDOURIS - les miserables

One of the most touching, sweepingly emotional and lyrical main themes i've ever heard. The whole score has something from the Delerue / Barry value coupled with the trademarked Poledouris' way of handling the melody and the arrangements. One of the best scores i've ever heard and one that i always return back to.

It says something about the quality of Poledouris output that this gorgeous score isn't in my personal top 5 Poledouris scores.

NP: The Man From Snowy River And Other Great Australian Themes - Bruce Rowland

Buried deep in my iTunes collection is this eye opening compilation of catchy themes composed by the pride of Australia, Bruce Rowland.

The highlight of this disc is easily the re-recorded 15 minute suite of music from arguably his most famous work, The Man From Snowy River. I was never a fan of the "sound" of the original soundtrack recording so this new recording with the Victorian Philharmonic Orchestra is a bit more open, spacious and concert like. I'm still listening to the excellent Snowy River suite but I'm very intrigued to hear what else Rowland has to deliver as I'm not all that familiar with his work. All The River's Run is the other score of his that I own.

Oh yeah, ever since seeing the movie and liking it very much, in part due to the score, I find this one of his strongest from his early days, as well as Grand Canyon. He sure knew how to write great melodies then as well huh? But so criminally short, I'd like an expanded release of this so much.

BTW, I don't know if you missed it Timmer, but you said a couple pages back you were interested in the music from Ace Combat 5, so I said I have it (my own customised album) and if you still like to hear it, just say so. But just to warn you, part of it's synthesized, but no cheap synths either... but the orchestral tracks are brilliant.
