Matrix Deluxe Edition | Don Davis

    Yay!! It finally came.

I'll get my one quiver out of the way now - what's up with the really wide mixing? Everything coming out of the rear speakers is way too loud.

Aside from that, this goes on the very small pile of perfect scores. In terms of getting the orchestra to do weird stuff, "Unable To Speak" is excellent. How do you conduct something like that? dizzy

80's action flicks? Chuck Norris? Man, you scare the crap out of me.

Eric scares you? Could be worse: Chuck Norris himself could be after you.

    NP: Planet Earth, George Fenton
It finally came in my latest order. And I'll be renting the series whenever I get the chance. It's really every bit as beautiful and far-ranging as Deep Blue, and what I've hard of The Blue Planet on DVD. I wish I had a more complete George Fenton collection, but I'm still missing some important titles such as Company of Wolves, Cry Freedom and The Gray Owl.

I guess the conducting is not far from the stuff Fowler did for BHD.

    Good point. You're probably right.

Listening to Eagle Eye...again...I love this score. And hopefully tomorrow is the movie! cheesy
  2. Also, the thing is rather more difficult to orchestrate. I guess these part were aleatoric (an educated guess, being aware that the piece referred to Lutoslawski - Davis admitted that himself - and that Lutoslawski created his own style of aleatorics). That means that you set only the sounds that are the borders (let's say that you can play between C and E) and the musicians basically improvise in these set intervals. So basically, aleatorical music is about playing what you want. Which is funny, because the official definition talks about using the probability theory, which makes it probably mroe mathematic than it really is. Demetris, could you add a word here?

    Hancock - John Powell

    Hotdiggity! Fine score!
A little short on the thematic side, perhaps, but it more than makes up for it in alternating energetic powerhouse cues (with the trademark zany Powell instrumentation, that works brilliantly) with lovely introspective cues.
Quite a balanced and eminently listenable score!

The next-to-last cue (Death And Transfiguration) even has some sort of Poledouris vibe going on.
    Me like!

MICHAEL BROOK - into the wild

Like any other Brook release i have, laid-back smooth acoustic guitar ontop of minimalistic, ambient synth pads. Soothing, calming, nostalgic.

Been a while since I've listened to the whole thing, but I do like that last track. (It's on my 'Heroes' playlist, so I've grown to love it.)

Jumper was more urgent for lack of a better phrase.
It imposed itself more strenuously, but as energetic as it was (and it sure contains some great action pieces!), it simply wasn't as much fun!

Yeah, I'would have to say I prefer Hancock over Jumper, if only because it's more balanced, and I simply enjoyed it more.

I don't like neither of them. But while i do throw the occasional listen to parts of Jumper, Hancock is something i can't bear at all.
