    Yes, it should.

    Here's....

    The theme to THE SAINT

Those opening bars were also used by John Scott in his theme for Return of The Saint and also the popped up version by Orbital for the film starring Val Kilmer.

But did you know that those famous opening bars were composed by the author and creator of The Saint, Leslie Charteris?

You wouldn't think of that if it weren't TRUE, Tim. A bit like JJ Abrams on his shows? Sure, why not?

Well done Pawel, Martijn & Thor the answer is TRUE!

    A quick little tale :

I got this question from a few weeks ago at the pub quiz I occasionally attend, worded differently the quiz-master wanted to know who composed those famous opening bars to The Saint theme ( and this question was in the MENSA round where you get 3 points for each correct answer rather than the usual 1 point ), I'm thinking 'yes, a perfect question for me' and I write down the answer EDWIN ASTLEY full of utter confidence and a smug feeling that I'd bet my life that nobody else in the pub would know that answer except me.

    rolleyes shame

  3. Damn! I knew this one, but I don't usually check this topic. I have the 4-CD set from Network featuring Astley's music from The Saint and it mentions Charteris' involvement in the booklet.

To quote form Andrew Pixley's extensive notes:

"It was the 1939 RKO film The Saint Strikes Back that introduced the Saint's whistled signature theme - referred to as "No Saint Am I" and devised by Charteris for Roy Webb's score...After negotiations with Charteris in late 1961, the rights were secured to adapt the adventures of the Saint as a filmed TV series...Producers turned to Edwin Astley for the scores... Astley said, "Charteris objected to the Saint theme [Astley's I presume] as he considered it to be a pitch off a tune called Blues In The Night and he was also quite put out because we were not using his tune as he called it...Charteris accused me of plagarizing my theme from him and in turn I threatened legal action if he did not stop claiming that I had stolen his work. Later, an American composer claimed to have written the whistling tune for the film and that Charteris had plagarized it from him!" In the event, by later episodes of the series it was agreed that cues which incorporated the musical motif "No Saint Am I" would include a note of Charteris' apparent contribution, credited on the episodes as "Original Saint Theme by Leslie Charteris".

Yes, one team did, containing an aquaintance of mine he admitted it had been "a wild 'educated' guess". Not that it really mattered as my team won anyway.

Note : the MENSA round is sort of seperate from the rest of the quiz in that, if you answer all five questions correctly you win a jackpot which is kept by the pub landlord and it builds up weekly, it's been building up for 4 months now so it must be a substantial amount of cash waiting to be won.
