  1. Spent the with Anne birding on Anglesey with Alan and Ruth of www.thebiggesttwitch.com fame. Set off at 8 this morning and got back home about 6 this evening.

A great day weatherwise, we saw a total of 90 different bird species. Highlights included kingfishers, bittern (rare to see), some taiga bean geese (possibly first sightings of these ever in Wales!), red-necked grebe (another rarity) and great views of a short-eared owl.

Most people may not be too interested but it was a great day!

Managed to get some of my younger colleagues from work to go to a weekly pub quiz with me and Kerry. Very pleased by this development, even though it means drinking on a Sunday night (not a good idea).

Oddly, my social life has suddenly become extremely active - probably the most active it's been since I was about 21. I like it! Also oddly, the people with whom I am socialising are mostly my subordinates* at work, which brings a few problems. But I'm enjoying life quite a lot more than I have for years, more I think than I have since before my dad died (2003).

*One of these subordinates is young, female, incredibly smart and incredibly gorgeous. Needless to say, no inappropriate thoughts ever cross my mind, but it's quite interesting watching her attract men like moths to a flame, constantly, whenever we're in public, and the ways she deals with that. I'd never really realised that it might be a "problem" to be someone like that but now I see that it brings its own challenges.

Workin with a (young) partner company on our company video. Just approved the special effects, but rejected the score. I just rejected a score! Yay! I'm bad... After hearing the composer finished it at 4 o'clock this morning. Hmm. So that's how it feels like to be "the studio". Still, the process is awesome!

Funny enough I had a talk about that with kids at school. I let them choose between pretty or happy. Most said pretty, because 'when you're pretty, you're happy too of course!' they said. OK, they are 12 and 13 year old but still... I also think many adults tend to think like that.

I remember a talk I had with a co-student who has four grown up daughters, all very very pretty (half Dutch, half Indonesian). She explained to me how some of her daughters were kind of suffering from their good looks sometimes... a bit like the story you just told. They also had to find a way to deal with it!

I went to the Tuesday night pop quiz last night.

For the very first time ever there was a film music round, I mean A PROPER FILM MUSIC ROUND, all film score and no songs ( there have been film music rounds before but usually consisting of 90% pre-existing songs used in films ), when this came up my four team mates gave me the sheet to write the answers "no pressure, Tim" I was told, "but we expect 100% correct answers". wink

    I got 7 / 10 shame

There were a few "the usual suspects", Dances With Wolves, Indiana Jones, Gladiator, Pirates of The Caribbean, Bladerunner etc but there were a few I couldn't ( and wouldn't ) have got....SAW, and two others I can't remember.

On another table were two girls ( both very attractive and in their twenties ) who got ( get fucking this slant ) 8 / 10
    omg

I will NEVER live this down. cry

On a Tuesday night? I wish I had been, at least I could've excused my 7 / 10 score. wink

I wanted to have a chat with them after the quiz but they left as soon as it was over. They'll be back again, I've seen them at the quiz before but then I had no reason* to strike up any conversation.

*All in a most appropriate way of course, I'm not 'on the pull' wink

I mentioned this story at the old ScoreReviews board.

A late evening summer pub outing and I somehow found myself talking James Bond with a very beautiful young lady, we got into talking about the music and she said she really liked David Arnold's scoring and it was such an improvement over Eric Serra's electro bleep scoring, whoah, she really knows her stuff I thought, how about John Barry I ask? Nobody beats John Barry she says, he is the master, I adore his music.

I tell you, It took Herculean willpower not to say sayonara to Mel and ask this girl to marry me right there and then spin wink

I ask you, WHY do conversations like this NEVER happen when you are single???? rolleyes

Why don't they ever happen when you're SINGLE either? I've never experienced anything like that. I once met a girl who was moderately interested in film music, but she was obviously taken.

  5. Spent the evening out at place called Northop College, not far from where we live here in North Wales. The college is where Anne is a lecturer and the evening there was a fundraiser to help send some students on a trip to Ecuador sometime next spring.

The main event of the evening was a talk given by Alan Davies and Ruth Miller, the two birdwatchers who went round the world in 2008 seeing how many species they could see in the calendar year. They set a new world record of seeing well over 4,000 different species, visiting 27 different countries on the way. They gave a talk on their own experiences when they were in Ecuador. They showed some gorgeous pictures of the birds they saw in this country. It was a great evening - and raised over £300 for the Ecuador pot.

But what "made my day a little bit better" was that I had the opportunity to hold a spider: a Chilean Rose tarantula. And it was great! It felt as soft as velvet as it crawled over my hands. This won't cure me of my dislike (maybe "hate" is an appropriate word on this occasion) for spiders that I find around the house (these are a completely different proposition).

I think these tarantulas will eat small spiders and I would be quite happy to have a few tarantulas loose in the house to keep the smaller spider numbers down.

    cool punk

I had a Chilean Rose ( one or two people may remember a pic of me holding it in my profile pic at MovieMusic.com? ), this species along with the Mexican Red Knee are the ones used in Indiana Jones and a bucket load of others movies, very mellow spiders that make them a choice in handling.

  6. There were a group of us, many who had not held a spider before, and one-by-one we each held it. And every one wanted to do it again!

Just returned from a one-hour radio special on NRK's P2 (the same program I earlier this year talked about TREE OF LIFE), where I talked about Norwegian film music with one of Norway's most respected actors, tv hosts, entertainment "wiz" Andreas Diesen and 'hot' Norwegian film composer Ginge.

We all got to pick out three Norwegian film music favourites. I picked out Arne Nordheim's mezmerizing and avantgarde A DAY IN THE LIFE OF IVAN DENISOVITSJ (1970), Patrick Doyle's superb HÅKON HÅKONSEN aka SHIPWRECKED (1990) and Johan Söderqvist extremely beautiful DE USYNLIGE aka TROUBLED WATER (2008).

The program will air on Friday.

Anyways, it made my day that I got to geek out on film music on national radio yet again. I feel like I have a missionary quest to enlighten the Norwegian people about our interest! smile
