  1. "endangered" releases over at Kritzerland:

    haineshisway:
We will probably sell out the following titles by the weekend:

    Cuba
The Pride and the Passion/Kings Go Forth
    Strategic Air Command

  2. Goldsmith overdose coming; posted today over at Intrada's message board:

    Roger:
And we'll be knocking out another 5 or 6 Goldsmith titles in the next few weeks. Some revisits, so premieres. Turned into a very Goldsmith heavy season for some reason.

The question is -- how many of them will be expansions of perfectly fine soundtracks, and not premiere releases of unreleased stuff? My guess is 100% the first.
    I am extremely serious.

Fingers crossed for Reincarnation of Peter Proud!
  3. The final FSM release has it's estimate, though not set in stone, release date pushed back from late February, to:

    SAE:
Looking like by mid March maybe. I believe everything is now signed off so just pressing plant stuff, which may be happening now. But don't quote me on that.

It's just such a shame. Every time I have to remember: there will be no more FSM releases. But alas, Lukas has to do what he wants to do. One day we may be facing the same thing from MV Gerhard, or Roger Feigelson.

  4. I think that it is inevitable that speciality labels that specialise in older releases will find it more and more difficult to survive. IMO, even now labels are struggling to find many titles that are sought after by more than a few individuals - I think that a lot of the "SOLD OUT" titles tend to sell out because they are limited edition.

I may have argued myself that these labels will survive because of peoples' need to buy CDs not because they want the music but because they don't want to be without the music: which is slightly different.

I think it's fine that it folds, even though I'm not sure which other company should take up the legacy of releasing the remaining unreleased Williams items from the 50's and 60's. That's my main concern. FSM was kind of the ideal venue for that.

However, BY GOD how long they've taken to get that last thing out. What's it been now...like 2 years?! Just get it out already and close the chapter.

The last CD, King Kong DE (249) was relased October 2012. According to SAE No 250 is in physical production.

  9. Posted today at FSM by Ray Faiola (Chelsea Rialto Studios) in response to a guess about the titles from Intrada possibly being "Those Calloways":

Neither YOUNGBLOODE or SLADE survive in mag. As for THOSE CALLOWAYS, I guess nobody has noticed the geese flying over at CR Studios!!

This is certainly a surprise, because the film is a Disney film, and a few months ago LLLR has stated that's Intrada territory; could this mean other labels are startign to get access to Disney? Tiem will tell!

  11. New from Varese:

    PATRICK DOYLE
    Impressions Of America

2013 certainly seems set to be a year of exciting celebrations! We are so excited to announce our latest release by one of film music’s greatest and most successful composers ... the great Patrick Doyle!

Doyle’s film scores include such blockbusters as Brave, Harry Potter and The Goblet Of Fire, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Thor, Bridget Jones’s Diary, Henry V and so many others! Doyle is a Scotsman who has been coming to America for many years now to bring his incredible music to Hollywood. These many trips have now inspired their own musical work and Doyle has composed a symphonic piece consisting of fifteen impressions. Patrick Doyle’s IMPRESSIONS OF AMERICA is a nostalgic look at America ... its landscapes, its traditions, and its people.

Scored for full symphony orchestra, we release Patrick Doyle’s IMPRESSIONS OF AMERICA to celebrate the composer’s 60th birthday in April of 2013.

I'm guessing this must be the project he recorded about two or so years ago that I saw titled "Americana"; I had assumed it was an earlier score to the film by the same name coming out soon (scored by Gabriel Yared) and that the score had simply been rejected. Guess not.

  12. Next up from Kritzerland is:

"How Green Was My Valley" (Alfred Newman)

And all I can say is How Green Was My Valley, which has been long gone and is much improved in the sound department (save for the sung main title, which unfortunately couldn't be helped much) and has the few little things that weren't included on the Arista release, is one of Newman's most beautiful creations. The film is a marvel and so is its score, and so is John Morris' score for the musical version. How much fun is it to release both together? FUN!

  13. And FSM No 250 is ...

The Wild Bunch by Jerry Fielding

    Quite a departure!

A bit of a disappointment this one - from someone who has the Warner Video CD of Fielding's score already and finds that this is more than enough of a sampling of this score.

I think that Looking at FSM's first and last release sort of encapsulates this genre as a whole: their first release in any form - was it Shire's The Taking of Pelham 1-2-3? - was a premier release of an iconic score. And here we have their final release; a "bells-and-whistles" release of a previously-released title (which they sold), with remastered sound, coupled with the (previously released) soundtrack album plus a whole slew of alternates.

Definitely more of a fizzling out of a great label rather than going out with a "wow!" title.

As I say, I already have this on CD so I may be poo-pooing it because I have this already. It's definitely one for the film scoring devotee rather than a general interest title, IMO.

Here's the thing, Alan, FSM 250 was in the works years ago before they decided to end the label.

So it may not have been their own preferred choice as their final release? If that's the case, then it's a bit of a shame.

I wonder how many others were "in development" that won't now be released by FSM? Hopefully, all that work won't be wasted but will get carried over by Lukas - or whoever - to associated labels.

The Wild Bunch? I won't be getting it.

I'm sure all the good work will continue one way or another, still, it's a sad end of an incredible era of film score releases with the demise of the FSM label.

Strange choice for a final release, since it already has had many good soundtracks.

I currently don't have ANY incarnation of THE WILD BUNCH, but if I'm going to get it, it would be an earlier, less comprehensive version. Maybe the one that was released with the DVD awhile back. The one with the best possible listening experience, at the very least.

  16. Well, it is a classic score and I am sure many collectors will be thrilled. I myself - I checked out the main theme again that I have on some sampler of re-recordings and I was not that impressed. So I'll probably pass on this one.

I think it's a fitting last title for FSM. Yes, it's not the 'big grail' everyone was expecting, but if you think about it, FSM was always about the underrated titles and composers and seldom sparked big response (the low quantity alert is proof of that). Lukas has done so much better teaming up with La-La Land I'm glad he gets to continue his work. I'm sure the grails people wanted the FSM label to do will still follow with the La-La stamp on it.

I doubt LaLaLand will do any of the remaining Williams scores from the 50's and 60's, in particular. FSM was kinda the only niche label that did that. But I still hope.

It's a "big grail" for me because I missed out on the previous limited release of it and I think it's a fantastic score. In fact I've never even bought the old shorter album because I always assumed a further release would be on the way at some point.

I disagree with this. FSM became a label that released "underrated titles and composers" in the latter years. When they first started it was significant release after significant release. In recent years it seemed to me that their pot from which they could choose their titles was becoming severely limited - as if they had used up all their big titles.
