  1. The only time that motif ever really annoyed me was in Troy, but I gave him a pass since he was a late addition.
  2. What happened to Thor? (Or was he not really interested in whether I experience emotion?)

    I am extremely serious.

  4. Skyfall Newman

CD arrived this afternoon so half way through my first listen away from the film, I think it's tremendous. Some of it is incredibly moody, the orchestration is phenomenal and I love the way he interpolates the classic theme in subtle and not so subtle ways.

  5. Fernando Velazquez - Lo imposible

A beautiful, oldschool, sincere and earnest emotional work. I didn't fully get into the emotional scope of it, but that's purely the fault of my own attention. It's great and will warrant much more listens.

Recently I also listened to Skyfall. Great action score from Thomas Newman.

  6. Skyfall - Thomas Newman

After year after year and score after score of writing an action piece here and there for mostly Oscar-bait movies, Newman finally busts out a proper action score, and I must say, I'm really fricking impressed. It's by far the best score he's done in years (maybe since WALL-E, another action-heavy score). I only listened to it in full once but already I'm hooked on "Grand Bazaar, Istanbul", "New Digs", "Shanghai Drive", "Welcome to Scotland", "She's Mine", and "Adrenaline", among others. Bravo Mr. Newman; I knew you could do it!

P.S: The Adele song is cool too.

Have been listening a lot to At World's End last week and especially the bonus disc from the Treasure Collection (on YouTube, don't own it yet!). It will be a perfect Christmas present I think, hm hm.

Also, I listened to James Newton Howard of course, for instance The Village. It had been a long time since I listened to that score. I do have the Gravel Road on a home made compilation so I forgot a bit how excellent most of the other tracks are!

I agree with what you said on The Village. It was a long time ago I heard the score, and the concert last week was the first time I heard it since a long time. Have heard it a few times since. smile

ANother score I was reminded of last week. Rolling piano in so many tracks.

Hell, I'm hooked on the whole score at this point!

I should also listen to my The Village album again. I love that soundtrack. But first 'Nightmare before Christmas' it is that time of year again :-)

NP: Terra Nova - Brian Tyler
A lot of interesting variety of action music, and according to the liner notes he wrote most of it by hand, rather than on a computer. I didn't know that the younger generation ever did that anymore.

It has some of the Lost-style string vibrato to make it feel all "mysterious". Oh and the sound quality is absolutely fantastic, on the same level as "Expendables 2" or maybe even a little better. I'm pleasantly surprised and impressed. Still on Disc 1 so I don't know if it can sustain interesting through 2.5 hours though.
I love you all. Never change. Well, unless you want to!
  8. Skyfall

Pretty much addicted to this, half way through my second listen of today. I had no idea Thomas Newman could write action music like this and the action material isn't even my favourite stuff. Some of it is so ethereal and his treatment of the theme is nothing short of genius.

I hope it's not the only action score we'll hear from Newman. The only thing disappointing about this score is it puts you in the mood for Thomas Newman action scores... yet this appears to be the only one?

I must say that I'm incredibly underwhelmed by Thomas' score. You're right that it is the first true action score from this fine composer, but it's amazing how generic and anonymous all of the action content sounded in the end. To be fair, I was hoping that this score would somehow open my eyes to the wonder of Thomas Newman, being only a mildly interested passerby of his previous scores.

Yes. Though I really wanted to like it, to be overwhelmed by an awesome Thomas Newman score. I enjoyed his work on the James Bond elements, the sneaky interpolation of it into the rhythms, the electronics. But overall, meh. Was there even a theme? The whole thing feels like a repeat of the GoldenEye fiasco, IMHO. You hear the composer's distinctive voice, but the overall album added zero excitement to the listening experience.

Sadly, after 3 full listen, I can't find anything more positive to say than all I've said above.

Am I the only one being exasperated by all the SKYFALL talk (whether film or score)?

Granted, it's a good score and I realize it's a big event for Bond fans, but I think I've had my dose already.
    I am extremely serious.

He's done plenty of action music in the past, but nothing this ballsy. You could try (ironically) his two Pixar scores if you want more.
