  1. Gustav Mahler: Symphony no 3 Abbado / Berlin Philharmonics

    I was unaware that Stanley Kubrick commissioned British composer Frank Cordell to adapt this symphony to accompany the film 2001. That was before Alex North composed an original score loosely inspired by the classical temp track that would later become the actual soundtrack.
    I find diverging information whether Cordell actually recorded that music. On one hand it is said his surviving wife tired to release the recording on the other hand Wikipedia doesn't mention the whole affair at all. As Mahler died in 1911, in 1968 his music was probably still under protection of copyright. (I don't know about British laws, in Germany at least that would have been the case.)
    So that is an "unused score" enigma that I didn't know about. It was recently discussed over at FSM.

  4. NP: The Best of Gerry Rafferty

    In Germany Rafferty is largely forgotten, or regarded a one hit wonder with "Baker Street". Yet there was much more to him.

    Sistine Chapel Choir & Massimo Palombella on Deutsche Grammophon

    Not for everyday but once in a while I like to listen to these aerial ambient choral pieces. Incidentally they remind me of certain kinds of ambient electronic music.

    NP: Peter Maffay MTV Unplugged (2017)

    I'm not a big fan of German Schlager in general or Peter Maffay in particular, but this concert recording I find spectacular. I caught it on TV some time ago and that lead to eventually obtain the album.

    Lots of Brahms lately. His violin sonatas, symphonies, the requiem and one of my favorite pieces ever, his second piano concerto (which has perhaps one of the most gorgeous slow movements ever composed).
  12. I'm not what you'd call an expert or anything, but Brahms never really hooked me. He's too academic for my tastes (if you'll pardon the pun); I prefer my Romantics a bit more romantic.

    Yeah, that's a common opinion and for the longest time, I shared it too. But once I reached my early 30s, Brahms just clicked with me. His music is more restrained than his contemporaries Dvorak and Tchaikovsky but it's like a volcano, seething with passion under the surface.

    I think a lot of the British bands of the 70s (post-Beatles) like 10CC didn't do that well in the US. Especially not 'art rock'/prog rock like this, which was often considered too 'highbrow' overseas.

    Ah, I honestly didn't know that he'd died.

    I had been rummaging around in my dad's humongous record collection at the weekend (which I do every couple of years and always find something new) and found a wealth of Martyn CDs this time round. I'd only heard Solid Air (on your recommendation, Tim kiss ), which is a superb record, so I am really glad to have discovered more. He creates a superb vibe.
