I truly appreciate composers who can deliver such scores for crappy movies. Another one who had perhaps the greatest talent at this, was Jerry Goldsmith of course.
Daybreakers isn't a bad little horror movie -- there's a lot more good (the score, the look, the premise, the actors) than there is bad. Most of the bad stems around some plot holes (such as the bit involving Sam Neill's character's human daughter) and the cure for vampirism being on iffy ground. Gordon's score helps alleviate some of those problems, along with a really active surround track.http://unsungfilmscores.blogspot.com/ -- My film/TV/game score review blog -

Cannibal Holocaust
I had heard this was one of the goriest, most shocking and controversial movies of all time, so I must admit I was a bit curious. That, and Riz Ortolani's beautiful music convinced me to see it. The gore is very realistic, but the acting, the story and the dialogue made it appear amateurish. I don't understand why this one is considered such a classic in the genre when it's such an amateur-fest. Perhaps I'm simply getting too old for the gore genre. Rated it 2 on imdb (It can thank Riz for not getting a 1).
In any case, I'm sure most people, no matter how much they dislike the movie, will appreciate the beauty of Ortolani's score:

I felt horrible after watching this one and wish I hadn't. I was intrigued by the music which I heard on SST and even though I knew what to expect based on the synopsis, it still creeped me out. The acting was bad indeed. But something about the gore scenes gets to you. The animal slaughter/torture was the worst part because that was real.
There's a funny interview with Ortolani about this score. The interviewer doesn't know Italian and is asking him questions he perhaps translated online.

Interesting interview. Too bad is too short. Ortolani seems to understand pretty well the questions though, the answers are really accurate.Anything with an orchestra or with a choir....at some point will reach you -

"The Road to PeRdition"
Based on a graphic comic novel, the film is quite enjoyable. It's sort of the interest level of "The Shawshank Redemption", with the pacing, often, of "The Green Mile". And, to top it all off, like both movies I just referenced, this one is also scored by Thomas Newman. I'll need to hear the score again, but so far I think I'd call this one of, if not the best score I've ever heard by him.The views and opinions of Ford A. Thaxton are his own and do not necessarily reflect the ones of ANYONE else. -

Lovely, enchanting movie of Danny Boyle. The fantasy and typical quirky moments work really well if you know a bit the style of a Danny Boyle movie, and the soundtrack of John Murphy is really lovely and fun (though Edward Scissorhands at times). Nothing to add to that

Forget me Not
Once I read it was in the style of I know what you Did last Summer I was scared it was going to be another crappy teenage slasher movie, but the actual good thing about this movie is the fantasy level that a little game can become quite real in the end. That infuses the gory (yet hardly scare encounters) with a dramatic level, and especially makes sure it's better acted than most scary movies. All in all, not bad at all

Very true, aslo your remarks about the Elfman-y score. It works good in the film, but i prefer John Murphy's own style by far. Such a pleasant movie. I hope he doesn't venture into crappy Bollywood regions again, now that he's made a shitload of money out of the later.Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders. -

it indeed does work well, but I thought there were a lot of Murphy styles too, anyway, lovely film and score. I think I'm still one of the very few here who hasn't seen Slumdog. Will correct that mistake soon enoughwaaaaaahhhhhhhh!!! Where's my nut? arrrghhhhhhh -

I fail to honestly understand how anyone who has seen Slumdog could have genuine disaffection for its score. The album, maybe - that's all down to taste. I've yet to hear from any of the music's detractors what music they think would have made the film better than Rahman's did. And the film is wonderful. -

The main issue I had was with the upbeat tone ESPECIALLY during the chase sequenece that showed the death of our main character's mother. The happy techno music was just waaaaaaaaaaaay off. I also found a lot of the score to be completely and utterly distracting. It was so in your face and took me out of the film in many cases. I liked the film very much but absolutely loathed the score.

I only saw the film once, but doesn't it cycle back around for a more moving scene where the young boy comes to terms with the death of his mother? (For some reason I remember it happening.) Boyle probably only wanted the film to appreciate what had happened when the excitement was over.A butterfly thinks therefore I am -

Interesting. For me, the film was the score. I couldn't imagine it with any other. I just thought it was perfect. -

The scene was all doo-tee-doo-tee-doo-tee chase music like it was the most exciting and joyous thing that was happen to these characters! Wrong, wrong, wrong! Even the scene with Latika at the train station... when Latika gets kidnapped.. Doop-Doopy-Doo-Do-Doo-Doopy-Doo. No sense of danger or threat. It all sounded like tracked source music.
Anyway, the songs were good... I will give Rahman that... but the score was so underwhelming and unmemorable!

The songs were good indeed, i said so too many times. The score is plain awful and the movie is overrated. Come on people, Bollywood has been doing exactly the same thing for so many years, but when an outsider does exactly the same, it's considered a masterpiece? How come? What i saw was a pretty standard, cheesy bollywood movie.Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders. -

The Simpsons Movie
Mildly amusing, decent attempt at doing a movie. It held my attention at least, but it's not a big step up from the tv series or anything. -

Contrasting reactions to the first episodes of the latest series of two tv shows:
Heroes
The writers have just bitten off more than they can chew. Too many characters, too many plot threads which don't seem to have anything to do with each other, too convoluted. It's been so long since the last season ended I couldn't remember anything about it and there wasn't even a brief summary at the start of this one. Not sure who I'm meant to like, who I'm not, given up trying to understand characters' motivations (it doesn't quite have "well, of COURSE character X did this even though it makes no sense, otherwise we couldn't have moved the plot where we needed to" of Lost, but it approaches that - and it doesn't have that other show's virtues).
Wallander
Superb second BBC mini-series based on the detective books. Kenneth Branagh is giving one of the great television performances here - so nuanced, just brilliant. The show is blissfully slow-moving, taking its time over everything, the Swedish locations are brilliant and even the music (by Martin Phipps) is impressive. Very good. -

Sherlock Holmes (2009)
While the acting of Downey Jr. and Jude Law was fantastic I missed something from this movie. As a comedy it was not funny enough, as an action-adventure/mistery movie it was not action-packed enough. I think the story was not interesting enough - which, in my case means that I was looking at my watch during the movie more than once. As a one-time cinema experience it is OK but I don't think I would watch it again. -

I saw it too, when I was in England. I expected to be dissapointed, but actually found it pretty funny. I'm the kind of Simpson "fan" who prefers the earlier stuff, and find episodes from the latter years to be too random, busy and completely unfunny. So I was surprised to find a pretty good story and some good laughs. There were unfortunately also several moments that were meant to be funny, but weren't.

Find me a script from Bollywood that is as cleverly put-together as the SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE script, either in terms of navigating all the information it does, or in the mirroring of core theme with surface action. It's a lot more like a clever Shyamalan script than a Bollywood script. Bollywood is Christmas decorations on this Dickens-with-Pulp-Fiction-structure.A butterfly thinks therefore I am -

I do not understand how Demetris spews so much venom and hate on it with such alarming regularity. It's ok to not like a movie and its score. It's ok to be disappointed that it reaped all the awards. Too bad Desplat did not win. For me, it was crazy to see Santaollalla win back-to-back earlier but I don't care about it now. You just move on. You don't have to change your opinion of the movie/score. But it's a bit much to extrapolate those feelings to bash anything related to the director/composer/genre ad nauseum. I choose to treat D's continued Slumdog-related bashing into thinking that he's just trolling. I can't rationalize this level of hatred otherwise.

That's a valid point.
I remember seeing some of the Danny Boyle interviews before the film released where he mentioned how he deliberately wanted the music to be like how music in mixed in Bolly films (overt and in-your-face). And he wanted the music to reflect the kind of adventure that Jamal's character had been through (a lot of it are flashbacks).
I find the score an odd fit but it works for me. There are just a couple of tracks that I find interesting (Latika's theme, Mausam & Escape). -

Interesting factoid! Thanks for that. That answers my question about the mix... but the tone I still think was all wrong. But then again I'm not all that familiar with Bollywood films so maybe similar scenes of tragedy and loss are scored in the same upbeat manner. Even with that said I still think it's the wrong approach.

I found Slumdog Millionaire ok, but not brilliant. I remember being annoyed by the songs from time to time, and found some of them too weird for my taste. I like the popular song Jai Ho a bit, but again nothing brilliant and it quickly becomes too much. As to the score I only noticed the lovely theme for Latika in the movie.

A part of me loved it, due to the twist and the atmosphere. The loneliness and isolation was done to perfection, and when the truth was revealed it was almost unbearably sad. It's the kind of movie that makes you reflect on it afterwards, and I love movies that do that. I can't give it top marks though, as alot of the movie I felt nothing was happening. I wouldn't use the word boredom, but the movie didn't engage me enough for much of its running time.
