  1. Damnit, I made the mistake of listening to Thor. Imagine to my surprise when I called a local theather and asked them for the showing times of "Gravity", thinking it must have been moved up early, only to find out it still comes out in October. Of course I immediately blamed it on a guy on a message board whom must have seen an advance showing. If only you were more famous, I could have just out-right blamed it on you. ;-)

Wait, you actually liked the score and possibly liked the film? uhm

I thought both film and score failed on a gargantuan level. It spends the whole time convincing you it's all heading to some sort of resolution, but it never happens. It's like one long, boring trailer. And then, mercifully, it ends. Fuck this movie, seriously.

I don't care if you liked it or not, I don't care if you understood the resolution or not, but you can't truthfully state that it doesn't have a resolution.
I love you all. Never change. Well, unless you want to!

I liked the part where it ended. That was certainly a resolution.

Also, it's really boring. Same with Oblivion, aside from the very nice visuals.

Different things for different people I guess but I was very pleasantly surprised by Jack Reacher. I wondered where writer-director Chris macquarie had been all these years since The Usual Suspects.

  3. Maybe I spoke too soon.

I'm, watching the season premiere of "South Park" and there's a serious drop in writing quality.

And Cartman's voice is off. Butters, too. And what's this? Officer Barbrady actually gets to speak for the firtst time in about two or more seasons. But his voice is off as well.

The whole thing was not funny. It was tedious to watch. It was boring and not engaging.

This is the worst episode of "South Park" I have seen. It took 17 SEASONS, but I finally found a bad episode. Skip it.

Maybe they aren't feeling so confident about making episodes either, as they are only showing ten episodes for this season. Previous seasons had 14 episodes.

    Taken

Apparently albanians are evil scum that are enslaving women. All the french people in this movie seem fine with it as well. But Liam Neeson will have none of this, and he kills a lot of them. His daughter is 17, but acts like a 12 year old, so she's obviously mentally retarded. Enslaving mentally retarded people is not cool!

    Anyway, rather entertaining movie.

    Rating: 7½

    Taken 2

As established in the first movie, people from Albania are evil. This time they seek revenge on Liam Neeson and his family in Istanbul. The turkish police seems to be cooperating with the albanians, so apparently turkish people are as evil as albanians. Liam Neeson kills a lot of them.

That said, this movie has several flaws, but also some nice moments.

    Rating: 6

Taken is a really powerful movie, Taken 2 rather ridiculous and boring

Though I'm not sure I'd call Taken 2 boring, once it gets going, it just had several other flaws. What I dislike most is the over edited fight sequences, with shakycam and so fast cutting that it gets so confusing that you've no idea what's going on and it even made me feel nauseous at one point.

Speaking of shakycam, I saw The Bourne supremacy last night, and while it's a good movie, the cam shakes like there's no tomorrow. Even when Bourne is sitting and reading a newspaper article, the camera is shaking so much that it's hard to catch what the article is saying, even though it's essential to the plot. I can appreciate the technique to convey urgency and chaos, but so many movies overuse it, and it becomes ridiculous instead.

Taken 2 felt like Liam Neeson aged 50 years. The amazing energy he had in the first was totally gone. Which made it boring for me. Megaton is clearly no Morel, so perhaps I was wrong to assume the best.

  6. "Never Forget" (1991)

TV movie based on the real life family, the Mermelstein's and their father Mel, a Jewish Holocaust survivor. One day he gets a letter in the mail from a Holocaust denier group, shoving in his face a large reward for anybody who can prove the Holocaust actually happened.

Everybody tells him, from lawyers to the Anti Defamation League, that it's nothing more than for the evil group to make fun of him, ridicule him in their kangaroo mock court. But he wants to respond as he gives talks on the Holocaust, in which his family died, and cannot let it go. Then, he finds a lawyer witha plan.
    This really happened.

Mel is played by Leonard Nemoy. He is quite convincing and displays some ncie range.

The film is moving, but unfortunately it doesn't go into enough detail. The ending court case just shows the beginning, then the judge speaking after it, igoring all the witness testimony and other dramatic moments that could have given some serious weight to the end.

The orchestral score by Henry Mancini is unremarkable and very short. The film needed a better score than it got.

Just saw BOOGIE NIGHTS for the first time. Better late than never. Fine film, although a tad bit overrated.

Although the characters in the film are fictional, "Dirk Diggler" is modelled on the life of John Holmes. But it occured me -- has anyone ever tried to make a film out of Holmes' life? Seems to me there was just as much drama in his real life as Mark Wahlberg's character in this film. If not more.
    I am extremely serious.
  7. "The Enchanted" (1984)

I was exchanging some e-mails with the director, who's only done two films, to clear up some information and he offered to send me both films, so I figured why not -- it'll give me a chance to hear the scores and you never know what you'll discover film wise. And if I don't like them, hey -- they were free. I did promise I'd write a little review for each in this thread.

Wish I could tell you more about it -- the DVD stopped playing about 26 minutes in and everytime I try to start it again, it freezes up the player.

The back of the DVD says:
"These woods be a strange place" said Booker, "My grammamma always called this place Hole in the Wall. Sometimes things pass through that Hole. And them things she called The Enchanted."

so begins a story of a strange and beautiful place, a door between two worlds. The story of a remote swamp in the backwoods of central Florida, a young white boy returned home from the sea, a wise old black man who was as "close to his blood family as he was going to get", and a strange woman who appears out of the swamp and changes both of their lives forever.

What I found so far was an old black man, a convincing old man who lives alone and fishes with his dog. A white young man who returns and to where his family was and decides to live in the old house and breed cows.

A group of people who don't say much, show up and start working his land. He lets them on advice from the black man who tells him not to say much, don't ask where they're from, and don't get too friendly with them.

The pacing is repsectably slow, but it earns it for the most part, instead of being slow just to make it apopear slow. It's nicely shot, the writing is good, and the characters belivable.

The score is by somebody named Phil Sawyer. It's an unremarkble synth work that doesn't go with the picture and even somewhat dates it. It's spuratic and badly placed most of the time. At one point I was watching the film and thinking they shoot too close to real civilization in the film -- I can hear a police siren going off. No, turns out that was part of the score. Why? I have no idea. The group of folks were working the land in a bright & sunny day. It was very distracting.

I'm going to try playing it again next time I restart the computer.

  8. I give things a chance based mainly to hear the scoring. If the score sucks, I move on quickly, unless the film is interesting in some way.

It sure beats the pants off anything in the theaters for about the last decade. I wouldn't trade anything in theaters for having watched "The Defection of Simas Kudirka", for example.

You might want to give it a try some time. I mean, I know they're longer than 30 minutes. ;-)

Yes there is Thor, James Cox 2003 film WONDERLAND starring an excellent turn from Val Kilmer as Holmes, it's very good and well worth your time.

Holmes was a Walter Mitty character and I liked the way the film showed two versions of what "really" happened.

p.s. I liked BOOGIE NIGHTS, great soundtrack too.

I watched CHILDREN OF THE STONES the other night, a 1976 childrens TV series that I found very creepy as a young teenage lad. Watching it again ( on youtube and in very high quality ) I was pleasantly surprised that it still holds up very well, they really don't make them like this anymore.

For those who may be interested ( I'm thinking Martijn, Alan and perhaps Thor too? ) here is the complete series...

    CHILDREN OF THE STONES

p.s. This was filmed not too far from me at Avebury stone circle in Wiltshire.

  10. "Where Pigeons Go to Die" (1990)

Old forgotten movie about a man who goes back to his grandfather's old broken down house to decide whether he wants to sell it or not. While there he remenices about spending time with his grandfther during the 1950's, when his father taught him to to train white birds to fly competitively and come home.

One day while at the house, grandfather has a stroke and collapses to the ground unconscious and the boy, freightened out of his mind, doesn't know to do and when he picks up the phone, he ends up trying to cal lthe family doctor, and his mother.

A sad tale about a boy and his grandfather and their final days together, with a touching old fashioned film ending.

    Starring Michael London.

The orchestral score is by Leonard Rosenman. It's plesant enough, but didn't grabd me particularly, but I can definitively see people liking it.

  11. Watching the second new episode of this season of "South Park", titled: "Informative Murder Porn".

Much better! Not a fantastic episode but the difference between the terrible season premiere and this one, is night and day.

About 95% of the episodes are up for free on the official website. So here is tonight's episode:

    Pacific Rim

Giant robots punching giant monsters in the sea. Sounds like a fun premise, and it could have been a fun film had they settled on the right tone. Instead, it's an awkward mix between tongue in cheek and an attempt at serious drama (which fails magnificently). The phony love story, paper thin characters, pointless back stories, embarrassing clichés and an overly long running time all add up to a pretty disappointing affair.

Pity. It has some cool visuals and a catchy score though.

    Breaking Bad finale

A perfect ending to a perfect show. The writers continually made the right decisions, and knew exactly how to deal with their characters' ultimate fates. Powerful and gripping drama that I'm sad to see end, but at the same time glad they ended it before it started to outstay its welcome. Hardly, if ever, a wasted scene in the entire series.

I impatiently await Vince Gilligan's next project.

Just finished watching the first season.

During season 2 Walter White regrets his crimes and turns himself in. The rest of the season is rather like The Shawshank Redemption, but with excessive nudity. In season 3, Walter is released from prison and tries to reconnect with his family. The highlight of this season is the Christmas episode where he's dressed as Santa and learns a valuable lesson about love and responsibility. In season 4, aliens attack our planet, because we have water and they're thirsty. Walter White designs a computer virus and he and Jesse fly up to the alien mothership to infect their computers thereby knocking out the force fields of all the ships in the alien fleet. The aliens, upon realizing that they'll have to reformat their hard drives and reinstall Windows, become so frustrated they leave Earth, and Walter and Jesse are celebrated as heroes. I've just started on season 5 and so far the plot is that Walter White takes up freestyle rapping and I hear the finale will be an epic rap battle in front of a hostile, mostly black audience.

Had the writers of the last season of Dexter got their hands on Breaking Bad, minus the aliens, I imagine this wouldn't be far off. Fuck the last season of Dexter.
