Quick note before I leave the office for today:

As far as health and volcanoes go, Pawel, I'll direct you to the University of Durham and their International Volcanic Health Hazard Network: www.dur.ac.uk/claire.horwell/ivhhn/guid … of_ash.pdf

In other words: if you stand in the way of volcano, you're likely to leave this world. More on this tomorrow. wink

  1. I can't remember whether I've pointed people in the direction of this photo already, but if I have it's certainly worth showing it again:

It's actually test footage from the boys at WETA but Jackson commented that the volcano was too small and not menacing looking to they scrapped it. dizzy

  3. Hey Christian, I know it's been a few days since we were all talking about those wonderful volcano films, but I had a question I didn't ask. How do you feel about cement barriers forming a lava-stopping wall?

As portrayed in the film, it's a bunch of BS.

It has been tried before (in some cases successfully), but just putting cement blocks in the lava's way won't do the trick. Viscous and slow-moving lava will simply continue to pond and thicken behind the barrier until it will topple and/or overflow the barrier. Fluid lava (a la Hawai'i) would either do that or take a different route around the barrier. Also...strengthening the barrier by driving with trucks against it? A lava flow has more power.

If you're interested, may I point you to this Wikipedia article that deals with the 1973 Eldfell eruption off Iceland, where countermeasures were taken to save the town from destruction by lava flows: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eldfell

Oh yes, read about that one. That island (Heimaey) has had every possible way of destruction (vulcano, monks, Vikings, ...) and still survives. Have you been there Christian? Or Surtsey?

I've visited Mount Vesuvius and Pompeii in Italy. A pretty awe-inspiring spectacle, and the thought that it's still one of the 10 most dangerous active volcanoes in the world and you're standing next to it can be bone-chilling too.
