A lot of Beltramierisms, but I enjoy it more than other of his scores.

This scores include some new ideas in Beltrami's usual list of tricks, but what I specially enjoy are Goldenthal moments in the last tracks.

"new York" is really, really Impressive! punk punk

Lots of underscore....very, very dragging. Few good tracks.

There are more than a few good tracks. It's a superb score with a few slow moving cues that do drag but I still think it's one of the year's best!

PS - You need to use a different word than underscore for atmospheric tracks. The entire score is underscore.

NP: THE INTERNATIONAL - Tom Tykwer, Johnny Kllimek, Reinhold Heil
Sure, it has its moments, but overall, this is a dronefest I didn't expect after the brilliant Perfume. Of course, I never expected something on that level or style, but its a drastic drop in intelligence of writing and inventiveness, repeating the same trics for way too long (many which already appeared in Land of the Dead) without any significant development. I love the work of Cliff Martinez and David Julyan, but this is, for a big part, something Tyler Bates could have composed.

So agree with that. The best of the year so far, and one of the best of the year once we reach the end of 2009 IMO. "Caleb Leaves" is one of Beltrami´s alltime highlights.

Some wonderful gems on this 6 CD box set, I'm playing disc 5 which has a lot of tracks I'm not overly acquainted with.

I'm always confused by the use of the word "underscore" as an insult. All film music is underscore! I guess it's a language thing.

I always understood the term 'underscore' was given for music that is just that, nothing more; music that accompanies a scene, but is essentially going nowhere, has no intelligence or structure and isn't interesting outside the film. Other then atmospheric scoring; this isn't essentially going anywhere, but can be interesting outside of the film (The Prestige, for example), specifically because it's not just sound, but there's more to it.

As far as I'm concerned a proper score is very much a part of the foreground. Almost everyone is subconciously as affected by it as by the visuals. It is very effective both in its presence and absence.

Well I've read the phrase "too much underscore" countless times. I do know what those who say it are referring to but I've never had a problem with it personally.

My less favourite of his scores for Emmerich movies. Just because I'm too familiar with the themes and the ridiculous scenes of the movie. So I prefer listen the exotic Stargate or the dark Godzilla (am I the onlly one? ).

But still one of these scores to die for, the percussion is just amazing.

Il Gattopardo (The Leopard) - Nino Rota (1963)

This is Rota how I prefer him: wildly Romantic and sentimental in his best "Romeo And Juliet" vein.
It's this sort of music, hammering overwhelming emotion right into your jugular vein with unabashed abandon, I always like the best.

Subtle, emotive and intelligent scoring - well worth checking out.

    Love it!

Today i've heard a lot of Goodies:

JOSEPH VITARELLI and ROB LANE - John Adams

TV music doesn't get any better; magnificent and heartfelt.

EDWARD NICOLAI ARTEMYEV - the barber of Siberia

One of the weirdest mixes and at the same time - most charming orchestral scores i've ever heard

BILL BROWN and some other dude - Command and Conquer: Generals

Game music at its most notable

REINHOLD HEIL / JOHNNY KLIMER / TOM TYKWER - Perfume: the story of a murderer

Some call it Baroque Porn music. I call it a modern film music masterpiece.

It's too "epic", too much choir, generally too loud for my liking (which is something I rarely say).

Read the other boards, my friend! A lot of people are singing KNOWING'S praises! Listen to it again. You are harping far too much on the lighter cues and missing the boat on the others. The last 5 scores beat the crap out of ANYTHING composed this year so far! And "Door Jam" and "New York" are some of the most impressive cues I've heard in a long time!

    Agree with you.

( I don't know if this will be good or bad for you tongue )

Knowing has a good action track "New York" and , yes, the last 3 tracks are epic, but nothing new. I mean it's Beltrami's typical melody (Very close to Hellboy) and some Goldenthal touches.

The whole score seems trying to be music for some kind of Night Shaymalan movie.

It's an Ok score, but nothing memorable. I do think 3:10 to Yuma is One of Beltrami's best works.

Don't worry D, I'm with you. It's good, but it's far from great. The opening action cues and closing dramatic cues are decent, but the middle part is a bore. sleep
