  1. 3 out of 5 is better. At least one star inflation because you saw it in a cinema. wink

Yeah, 3 out of 5 sounds a bit more sensible to me. (Which is still a very good rating... so maybe 2.6987 out of 5.)
  2. Yeah, maybe that.

In the grand scheme of things, I'd say 4 out of 5 is extremely generous. But I agree with the rest!

It's possible he was awarding it 4/5 out of 5, which is 0.8 more than I would have awarded Mission: Impossible 3, so that's a decent rate of progress for Abrams.

(The Sunday Times awarded it 5/5. The last time a film got 5/5 from them was probably from before Orson Welles was fat.)

5/5 for Star Trek? This is totally over the top.

    Nueve Rainas (Nine Queens)
Argentinian heist flick that's a great deal of fun. Two small-time swindlers join hands to sell off a replica of precious stamps to a rich businessman. Fast and pacy. Obviously Hollywood had to come in later and remake it as Criminal.

    For Your Eyes Only

Wanted to buy another Bond film on Blu-Ray and picked this one since I think I've only seen it once before. After a dire pre-credits sequence (which made me wonder if I had been hasty in proclaiming Die Another Day to be easily the worst Bond film) it became somewhat enjoyable after that, but all felt a bit inconsequential. Roger Moore's heart didn't really seem to be in it. Bill Conti's music veers from the sublime to the ridiculous; the early disco stuff is horrific, but the orchestral scoring of the underwater sequences near the end is first-rate.

    Bollix.
It's one of the finest Bond films made, that sees Bond back into a rather more nasty, cold-hearted approach favoured by the Connery Camp.

Incidentally, did you know Blondie was first approached to do the title sequence?
The song was rejected, but they released it later on their own label.
Here's a clever chappie who integrated the actual titles with the Blondie song.
I like the Conti/Easton rendition, but this is not bad. Not bad at all!

    DOUBT

A heavy and long cinematic journey based on an extremely simple and sadly not challenging storyline that - other than the fine performances by the two leads, has nothing else to offer than deep, long yawns and a very uninspired and uninvolved musical score.
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.

    La Zona

Excellent Mexican drama that raises hard questions and unfortunately the story is as valid in today's Hungary as it is in Mexico. A very well-made movie, too with a soundtrack that is quite effective in the film but I wouldn't listen to at home.

    Vera Drake

There is one common thing in all of Mike Leigh's movies: after watching them I feel like I was dragged deep down into the deepest misery of the human state. This movie is no exception. Great acting by Imelda Staunton and it is the least-improvised script so far by Leigh. But I definitely wouldn't watch it again.

It looked a bit boring to me too. (I didn't get around to seeing the film - the trailer was enough.)

Yeah, was too tired last night to write down my thoughts smile

ANGELS AND DEMONS (with slight spoilers)

A perfectly directed and executed action packed race against the clock. A very well known real science experiment that started last year (notably CERN's anti-matter experiments) are getting speed-up in the beginning of the movie and the much-awaited very anti-matter is being produced. Then a well-known ancient organization pops up from the depths and starts causing major trouble at the Vatican. Professor Tom Hanks (wink) is being brought in to assist with symbolisms and his expertise on the said field, only to uncover bit by bit a succession of murders and a dark circuit of evil plots and dangerous games of power.

Whilst DA VINCI CODE was more of an off-beat and mystique slow passage down the dark secrets of Christianity, ANGELS AND DEMONS is right at the point where Science and Religion get crossed, and tries to find ways and common ground in order to stop them from fighting each other through the years, and connect them instead; if possible.

It's clever and fact-paced, very entertaining and BIG Hollywood action that it's hard (but not impossible) to leave any audience unsatisfied. Especially its ending which starts and goes to a very cheesy direction, it thankfully gets saved very cleverly during the last 10 minutes or so! Audio-Visually stunning with fine acting, clever and strong plot and with an amazing score to escort it, the movie is a must-see for anyone who loves grand-scale and not necessarily stupid Hollywood entertainment.

As for the score, it fits the movie like a glove. I'd really love to hear suggestions from people who've seen the movie but didn't like the score, on what kind of music would fit that movie in a better way or why Zimmer's frantic and grand-scale ride doesn't fit the visuals perfectly.

I've also heard from people who have read the book as well, that it's very close to the book itself too; slight-to-none changes that is so thankfully it'll leave readers of the book satisfied too.

To me Zimmer's score sounded like sonic wallpaper. It wasn't amazing but it was bad. It was so-so. It makes for a good album but the score didn't blow me away the way The Da Vinci Code did.

As for the film itself... I preferred the slow paced The Da Vinci Code. BTW, what BIG action are you talking about, Demetris? There was one gun fight and a few scenes where our main characters are going from one place to another at high speeds... but there's no BIG Hollywood ACTION in this film. I actually though it was rather humourous to see the fast paced cutting of a Borune film during those "traveling" sequences. And Hans Zimmer's over the top score didn't help. And while the cast was impressive they all looked bored on screen.

One aspect that was impressive was the production design and the recreation of the Vatican and Sistine Chapel. Impressive work!

If they just had some sort of satisfying conclusion then I would share you sentiments. Bit in saying that JPIII is a boat load of fun and I would welcome a fourth film. ILM's CGI dino's are some of the best computer effects I've ever seen.

I'm going through the Sherlock Holmes/Basil Rathbone series again. Started off with #1 The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. This was a 20th Century Fox film (1 of 2) and starred Ida Lupino and George Zucco (Moriarity).
