QUARTET - Composed, co-written, and directed by JOE HISAISHI

The story is typical... Four young musicians, who once reluctantly formed a string quartet at music school and miserably failed at a contest, happen to reunite after they lost their jobs / lost out in several competitions. They try the quartet contest again, for no particular reason, or for money, or for the pride. They practice and get close during a low-budget tour around the country (mostly suburbs). But...

The story and dialogues are full of cliches, but I love those cliches! smile It's well-written, and all the characters are likable. It also has visually beautiful scenes with beautiful music.

Of course, all the music played in this film were written by the director. I'm listening to the soundtrack right now. The main theme is purely Hisaishism, but amazing! (An important factor of the story is who wrote that piece.) I'll write about it on Now Playing thread later.

Oh and there are two much more obvious self-applause scenes than Jack Black singing Driving Miss Daisy! Love it! biggrin

This film is all about music. It's worth watching for those who love Hisaishi's music, or music generally. It tells how Hisaishi think about music.

CURSE OF THE PHAROH (1957) does have a score by Les Baxter but little else. In fact I rather like the music and wouldn't mind seeing a release of the material someday. Forget the movie. The Universal Mummy material is much better.

Great film, very cheesy; but great. The music is fitting, but essentially an unbearable, cheap synth trip on CD. Oh and when the Bollywood end titles came up, i wanted to throw a brick at the TV!

That's ok. It's just a nice homage to good old Bolly.

    Saw last night...
    L'Appartement (1996)
Pretty good! Starring Vincent Cassel and Monica Bellucci. This was remade recently as Wicker Park. Nearly half the movie (a love triangle) plays out and then we see bits and pieces that were hidden and that bring things to a new light. The ending was a little disappointing though.
The score by Peter Chase is quite nice. Lots of sax at first but towards the end he's influenced a lot by Goldsmith's Basic Instinct.

    And today...
    The Parent Trap (1998)
Natasha Richardson, Dennis Quaid and Lindsay Lohan. Great fun! And a fine Silvestri score.

    Sleeping Beauty

Breathtaking! This was made in 1959!? The Blu-Ray is magnificent.
  1. Magnolia (1999)

Watched this again, brilliant film. About the emotional and physical pain and regret people go through during one particular day. The various storylines intertwine with each other and it's only when the movie is over, you know how it all makes sense. This one moves me to tears like only a few do thanks to all the amazing performances and the very intelligent script. The camera work is ground breaking at times and the use of music is on the target. I simply watched and listened in amazement to how the music is glued to the scenes, and when a new scene comes up, or we witness a new character event the music shifts gear. And what to say of the use of the song 'Save Me'? Imaginative and original do not do it justice. And brace yourself for the ending.

To anyone who has missed it, watch this immediately, it's a true masterpiece in my book and one I will never tire of seeing.

    The Black Hole (1979)
The photography is gorgeous. It really is.
In fact this may be one of the prettiest looking sci fi films from the latter half of the twentieth century.
But the script is terrible: switching from ominous foreboding (the best parts, really) to cringe-making comic relief ("cute" droid V.I.N.C.E.N.T., spouting two bit clichés and looking like something out of Blue Peter, is NO R2-D2).
The characters are wooden. There is no tension arc whatsoever (shooting the completely static security droids is more like witnessing a not particularly inspired fun fair shooting gallery than a rivieting action scene), nor any emotion at all in fact.

And the ending when we find out that beyond the Black Hole apparently lies a summary of the last scene from Fantasia is just ludicrous. slant

    2 out of 5

John Barry's music is wonderfully dark and solemn and supports the film's darker moments very well.
The (quadruply repeated!) use of the Overture for the few action scenes however is beyond cheesy: just completely unfitting and jarring.

    3.5 out of 5

    ------------------------------------
    Le Cercle Rouge (1970)
At the suggestion of one of our esteemed members, I found myself this French thriller with the very distinguished cast of Alain Delon, André Bourvil, Gian Maria Volonté and Yves Montand.
As with many French "policiers" of the day, the film is cold and slightly desploate, with a lot of snow, barren landscapes and desoltae cityscapes. But I like tat for a gritty thriller style.

The story is pretty straightforward (recently freed ex-con hooks up with criminal on the lam to act on a tip of a major jewelry heist), but the acting and the languid pace makes this film worthwhile. As remarked upon earlier, the complete lack of dialogue and music dyuring the crucial heist intensifies the tension immensely!

Alain Delon's mustache looks completely off, Volonté's character's motivation and actions remain mostly unexplained (leading to one very jarring loose end at the very end) and Montand is sadly underused, but Bourvil is a surprise as the world weary commissaire. Bourvil is mostly known for his comedic roles, and this tour de force is a very pleasant surprise.

A pertty dark, and rather male-oriented film (I only noticed at the end that there's just one female speaking part, and she has just one line!), but very much recommended, especially for fans of the genre.

    4 out of 5

Eric Demarsan's mostly cool jazz type score is enjoyable and most apt, but never intrusive.
In fact, as said, the most crucial scenes remain unscored.

    ------------------------------------
    Flash Gordon (1980)

Goodlooking, well scripted, directed with a sense of fun and proportion and with a supporting cast to drool over, THIS is how you should make a science fiction hommage. Lavishly shot, with some of the best set and costume design in cinematographic history, this pastiche has something for everyone.

The action is well shot, the comic relief well timed, the acting -with the jarring exception of the two leads Sam Jones (Flash) and Melody Anderson (Dale Arden)- excellent.

Much of the set and special effects design has its basis in the 1930's Republic Serial of Flash Gordon, whihc makes for a fantastic hommage, and the film's tongue firmly implanted in its cheek (Princess Aura's pet midget is called "Fellini") just adds to the fun. And yes, among all the other eye candy, Ornella Mutti IS an absolutely stunning standout.

    4 out of 5

Queen's fantastic rock score (augmented with Howard Blake's orchestral additions) just adds to the bundle of fun!

p.s. The use of the Overture in The Black Hole is a cut and paste job, I seriously doubt it was Barry's doing, in fact the Overture was written as a presentation for the film back in the days when it would be played just before the cinema curtains opened.

Fully agree: the hack-n-slash cut-n-paste job of repeating it FOUR times over ONE scene makes that abundantly clear (aside from it being completely inappropriate and mistimed).

in fact the Overture was written as a presentation for the film back in the days when it would be played just before the cinema curtains opened.

I know: the DVD version I saw actually opened with it while a cue card "Black Hole Overture" remained static for the duration. Very cool., cool

Time does show this movie is telling you exactly what has happened, but just like The 6th Sense you just don't pick it up. Of course, it is nowhere near the brilliance of The 6th Sense

    Babylon AD

Vin Diesel is a charismatic actor, but this movie doesn't deserve him. In fact he is the only one that makes it bareable to watch at. This movie is lacking a soul and emotion, and if you hear the director had to change half the movie because Twentieth Century Fox said him to do so, you wonder if his vision could have saved this movie. Again it is rather fun, but in 5 seconds you don't remember a goddamn thing

    Quantum Of Solace (Blu-ray)

It sucked in the theaters, and it still sucks now. Ok, it's not a bad film by any means, but it's a massive disappointment after Casino Royale. The story jumps all over the place, the action is too hectic to work out what's going on, and Daniel Craig doesn't open his mouth enough and you can't understand half of what he's saying.

As for a Blu-ray release, it's nothing special. A lackluster audio mix, decent image quality but nothing to make you go "wow!" and nothing apart from a semi-decent making of feature and the video podcasts they put on the website as extras. My original score still stands.

    3/5

I couldn't disagree more with this review. vomit
