Ooh, I just found an 11 disc boxset of Shostakovich's symphonies conducted by a Mr. Kondrashin in my Dad's collection (I'm home for Easter). S'pose I should start the ripping...

Well, how cool is that!? smile beer

The recordings for Kondrashin's versions aren't brilliant but the performances are stunning, his take on 'The Leningrad' is mindblowing............play LOUD AS.

    Baroque Trumpert Concertos

The incomparable Maurice André plays Vivaldi, Handel, Telemann and others.
Definitely something to soothe ragged nerves.

I hope all is well. My nerves aren't completely OK either and I play a lot of music to relax or to be distracted.
It's either film music or my Zumba playlist because it makes me happy.

    Steven,
The first two of Shostakovich that I would start with are film scores!!! Hamlet and The Gadfly.

I think that box of symphonies he found at his folks house is the BEST way to start lick , Steven is well capable of digesting fabulous works of complexity.

NP : PRINCE IGOR - Alexander Borodin

A lovely work. This was completed and orchestrated after Borodin's premature death by Glazunov and Rimsky-Korsakov.

  2. For a while I read it as if Glazunov and Rimsky-Korsakov were the cause of Borodin's death (you know, death by hanging, death by Glazunov and Rimsky-Korsakov bunny ) dizzy

The priest tried to convince him that he did wrong when he took his own life with the help of Gospels.

Actually Steven "Hamlet," available on Naxos as a reasonable download, is one of the better soundtracks I've heard.

I prefer Morricone's score but I doubt I could sell Steven on that one wink

Regardless, I really enjoy Shostakovitch's score.

  4. I've just downloaded versions of Williams Walton's scores to Hamlet and Henry V. I don't know why there's such a need to have narration included on some/most of these releases. I had to spend some time editing out all the included narration.

It's blue sunny skies and It's hard to get better than Pat Metheny for melodic, possitive vibe feel good melodies.

This album is FANTASTIC and one of my all time favourites. punk

Nothing like a Nightwish album to take your mind of things, despite it not being their best

    NP: ORCHESTRAL WORKS (Aaron Copland)

A great 2CD collection. Right now, it's the "Lincoln Portrait" with no narration. It's like the B-side of Williams' AMERICAN JOURNEY or even SAVING PRIVATE RYAN.
    I am extremely serious.

  7. NP: 'Night of the Flying Horses' in all its variations (Osvaldo Golijov)

A modern concert piece that holds its own against classic Romantic programmatic works like 'In the Steppes of Central Asia' (Borodin).

I think it's brilliant, chilled melodies ( real, hummable melodies ) played by brilliant musicians.

I'd seriously recommend Secret Story, some orchestral elements, feel good, melodic, and very film music like at times and VERY GOOD "film music" at that, I can't recommend it more!? cool

I was wondering if you'd listened to any of the Shostakovitch box set yet Steven? I also found out that the box set was remastered so it should sound better than the single discs I have!?

IMO Kondrashin is THE Shostakovitch conductor.
