The Vagrant

Christopher Young

" Are you ready for sounds? "

Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the regular release

The Vagrant, another one of those weird movies that wouldn't stand a chance now at the box office today. But it's sort of the returning factor in Christopher Young's career. The odd little one that gets accepted, just to get quirky on us. I'm sure you heard weird scores by him up until now, but this one surely pushes the boundaries too much I'm afraid. I think it's down to occasional soft shrieking violins, pizzicato strings, wacky accordion and even marimbas. But that's not even the strangest thing, because occasional breathing effects and wacky vocals heighten the mood even more. Put that together with an occasional person (I guess the vagrant) whistling and you have a weird ass experimental score. Or better put, just give the 10 minute "Vagrant Rhythms" a whirl and you'll get everything you need. So, whatever you expect, just expect nothing of melodies or themes or even music. And even though I admire the experimental originality of it, this is NOT what I wish to hear on a musical CD. For the people who like their scores quirky, original and above all devoid of melodies.

A non attempt from top to bottom
the only returning theme is god forbid a music box melody ("Trash Dreams", "A Giblet to Tastey", "Cards on the Table")
The final cue is a disgrace for Christopher Young standards, no matter the intention that went in it
