Terminator Genisys

" The Terminator sound ... officially terminated "

Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the download only release

He's Back. Arnold Schwarzenegger, that is as the Guardian. Not the terminator anymore, but the Guardian. One of the things that doesn't mesh well with me. Another one is the music. I mean all well and done, but RC music that sounds exactly the way you're expecting it is beginning to wear thin in this day and age. I mean this is The Terminator, one of those series that has it's distinguishable sound. Hearing dramatic music that could have come out of The Da Vinci Code and Rush ("Fate and Hope", "If You Love me You Die") is not what I call Terminator music. And the rest that blends into one giant blur after a while is either approachable but typical RC music or musical sound effects that stand more for the T-1000 than the actual sound effects of the film.

I mean Brad Fiedel did bring forth his own ideas, electronics and mood for The Terminator scores, but somehow it clicked and it meshed so well with the visuals on screen. Here it doesn't mesh enough. "Fight" is one of the downfalls of the score, just downright horrible. The occasional rather cool heroic tracks ("Bus Ride" and "Sacrifice") do sound approachable in their own right, but I'm getting tired of hearing them. And it's definitely not Schwarzenegger Terminator material. The occasional hints of Fiedel's theme ("Better Days", "It's Really Me") show more ode to Fiedel's music than the 2 Beltrami / Elfman scores combined, but again they sound weird. It's like it's too polished for The Terminator.

I can't explain it, but the score's chock full of average tracks too (especially in the middle). Either it's approachable but typical RC material or one gritty musical sound effects cue after another (mostly representing the T-1000). Perhaps it's a problem when there are more people listed as sampling team than actual orchestrators. Is Terminator Genisys atrocious? Definitely not. At times you're even actually getting music. But the problem is that it's all so common and unoriginal. Plus it's definitely not Terminator music and the RC style just doesn't work for me here. Maybe I'm getting too old for these scores? Perhaps but so is Arny and it seems he's doing alright for Terminator Genisys. I don't know. This isn't Terminator material for me, and feels out of place, despite the attempt to deliver the typical anthems and rhythms.

And why is it the theme receives the one and only version at the end credits? I mean "Terminated" is Fiedel /Terminator material.
