Stanno Tutti Bene was the second score Ennio Morricone wrote for a Giuseppe Tornatore film after the wonderful Nuovo Cinema Paradiso. More wonderful collaborations would follow, but I feel that Nuovo Cinema Paradiso and La Sconosciuta are the only two that deserve to be called masterpieces.
Stanno Tutti Bene might not be the very best, but it is certainly the most varied score the maestro wrote for a Tornatore film. The music conveys a wide array of musical ideas and instruments, and varying between moods of romance to melodrama and touches of ominousity. For instance, there is the classical baroque music in a cue like Atelier Borocco and the delightful melodramatic waltz in Il vino e l´uva. Or the ominous sitar and string writing in Nel Tempo and the ethereal Sogno for a dream sequence in the film, which was co-written by Andrea Morricone. It just displays so much richness, it becomes very hard to dislike. Morricone´s music sounds a lot like the Fellinesque mood that Nino Rota often crafted so perfectly.
La Classe Operaia Va in Paradiso featured an uncredited appearance of the maestro himself as a factory worker. In Stanno Tutti Bene the composer had a cameo as the conductor of an orchestra. Usually cameos leave me dead cold, but if someone who you admire does them once or twice... Then it actually evokes some genuine emotions.
The score was already well presented in the form of 17 tracks cds by CAM. This new 2015 edition by GDM offers you five additional, inedit tracks. Sometimes extended editions of Morricone works offer fantastic new material, like the extended GDM release of Il Segreto di Sahara. If only for the great the Edda Dell'Orso performance it was worth every penny. Sadly, the bonus tracks on Stanno Tutti Benno are of no importance, as is often the case with ´inedit´ tracks. Unless you are a Morricone completist, It´s best to choose one of them.
