Now and Then

" Dramatic background score that has something to say "

Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the regular release

Now and Then was the female Stand by Me of its time, 4 best friends who tell of an adventure that happened when they were young. The female Stand by Me even goes to extreme heights to show its similarities by making it an adventure about a boy who died and who they might have resurrected through one of their séances. Despite an all star cast of child actresses and female adult stars, the movie was considered to be the weak, weak, weak Stand by Me version, ultimately leaving it up to crew members to make it particularly memorable.

Specifically for us, crew member Cliff Eidelman was the most important name of that list. And his entry is the expected yet typically strong dramatic score. Opening in strong Thomas Newman mode, the string and piano laden "Main Title" is beautiful, dramatic and hopeful, the perfect starter for what's to come. This melody opens "Remembrance" as well, never to appear again, yet working up to several new returning themes, themes that will get their prime time moment later on in the score. For instance the calm dramatic melody of "It's my Mom" will get a stronger performance during the lovely "It's a Girl" or the powerful "Rest in Peace Johnny", a wonderful final encore where all the melodies return for one final showdown.

Speaking of Thomas Newman and its opening harmony, more of Thomas Newman's magic will come out to play in the latter tracks, most specifically his bouncy melodies ("Secret Meeting") or his more eerie sprightliness ("Spirits are Here"). And in the remaining tracks Eidelman keeps returning to those melodies and themes in one form or another. Like the uneasy string music that depicts danger in "Roberta Fakes Death" and "Pete Saves Sam". The opening melody sadly isn't among the returning melodies, but the powerful "Rest in Peace Johnny" does present a wonderful conclusion to a short lived adventure.

For this kind of adventure, you would expect fluffier music or more comedic racing around melodies, but Eidelman's Now and Then is seriously serious and sometimes incredibly dramatic. Luckily for us, it was fitting for the time of 1995. And this short release does prove to be a wonderful old fashioned dramatic listening experience that brings more riches that one might expect. Hooray for 1995 I'd say.
