La Révolution Française

Georges Delerue

" Vive le Roi! "

Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the limited release

La Révolution Française is an ambitious project of 1989, spawning 6 hours of the revolution and how it resulted in the deaths of Marie Antoinette, Danton and Desmoulins, presenting also the destruction of the Bastille, Women's March to Versailles, Fete de la Federation and the Fall of the Monarchy. An epic project no doubt, getting probably the most epic theme of Delerue's career. Its massive opening is simply put sensational, and is perhaps one of his greatest achievements. This theme is repeated several times on the first CD, in short and long versions. Slightly altered but always recognizable. Perhaps it's used too often on the first CD, and hardly on the second. Because the second is quite simply very sombre, dark and unnerving. It's not called the terrible years for nothing. So, the second CD might be a hard nut to crack for listeners, it's the first CD that wins you over. The theme, the playful waltzes, the moments for choir and the several aristocratic fanfares. It are moments like these that make the first CD worth it. This double CD release is a reissue of Disques CinéMusique's 2CD release of 2003. Only here the selection is even more longer through the addition of bonus cues, plus the sound is enhanced. And they changed the opening and closing track. Take it from me. The theme is sensational, and I can definitely live with the first CD. But the second CD is way too long, and offers very little I'll remember ("Exécution de Robespierre" is a strong exception). For those who haven't acquired it yet, or feel that the sound could have been better.

The theme, oh the theme. Simply put, a sensational choral hymn.
Several strong fanfares and soft choral moments on both CD's.
The first CD is quite fun, even though the bonus tracks weren't needed.
The second CD however is way too long. Plus it doesn't hold much of interest compared to the first.
The bonus tracks are always nice for completists, but for me it's too much. Comparing the already massive length of the original score.
