Game of Thrones (Season 2)

Ramin Djawadi

" The game is back on, dum dum dum dum dum dum! "

Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the regular release

Game of Thrones is hot, Game of Thrones is epic, Game of Thrones is going to war. With Ramin Djawadi, it seems this series somehow found its matching voice. And season one proved it. This second Season isn't that strong, I already realized that when I heard it in context, but somehow Djawadi still delivers several important moments. A mixture of the Khaleesi theme and the main theme always works ("Mother of Dragons") though it's not as memorable as the final track of Season 1, the Winterfell theme continues to make an impact and several dark cues resurrect fond disturbing moments of the first CD, enough to warrant your attention. But it's obvious Season 2 lacks something. Perhaps some diversity. Though a new theme is born (briefly in "Stand and Fight" and in song version in "The Rains of Castamere") it lacks some diversity and it builds on the highlights of the first. It's a good CD but definitely not the winner of the show.

Recurring themes (including the King's theme, Winterfell theme and Khaleesi theme) + several new ones.
In dramatic mode (combined with the themes) Game of Thrones truly makes a serious impact, whether light or dark.
The album is definitely weaker than the first.
Though the themes return, and in variation, they somehow lack a certain kind of edge during several action performances.
Despite being highly effective, the end cue of this disc is not that impressive.
