Food Chains

Gil Talmi

" Lovely albeit quite the same "

Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the download only release

Gil Talmi, the composer who made a small impression with Savannah last year delivers Food Chains, a documentary about the people that pick and pluck the food we eat today, often in unbearable and cheap conditions. A documentary about the labor of love and the price of labor that goes into it. For this documentary, different sounds where needed than the lush string themes we received in Savannah. And that's evident throughout the score. Piano and gentle guitar rhythms fuel the score now, opening "Exploitation" quite entertainingly. And how lovely and lightly that all feels, it expands that delightfulness even more in "Day by Day", continuously dancing around through that guitar. But after a while, no matter how approachable and enjoyable it all sounds, it begins to sound a bit the same.

The same for the more serious music. Stuff like "Wave after Wave" and "It happened Right Here" is damn effective, but quite somber and a bit forgettable too. And the same theme keeps returning too, an effective and pleasant theme albeit a bit repetitive as well. Though it gets a bit of extra determination through the added vocals in "We Will Still be There", a rather potent moment of the disc. All in all, Food Chains is lovely and enjoyable. But rather repetitive after a while too. It gets the job done and will definitely support the scenery with the necessary punch, but for a listening experience it offers too little variation. Making it the perfect background candidate for sure.
